Luxman's 38 series of valve integrated amplifiers has been in production in one form or another since the early 1960s. In that time, the valve complements have changed on a number of occasions, the latest variant incorporating an EL34 ultra-linear output stage. Now, for the first time, Luxman has produced a CD player to match the amplifier.

The D-38u incorporates circuit design originally included in the company’s D series CD/SACD players, alongside a Burr-Brown PCM1754 DAC and a selector switch allowing users to choose between solid state and thermionic output stages, the latter featuring an ECC82 working as a cathode follower. In addition to the headphone socket is a pair of line-level RCAs on the rear panel, as well digital outputs in the form of co-axial and optical S/PDIF.

The UK price has yet to be confirmed, but is likely to be around £2,500. Visit Select Audio for more information.
